About - Pacific Peace Network

The Pacific Peace Network is a collective of communities and organisations from Pacific islands and nations standing in solidarity and working together for a peaceful, sustainable, and thriving world free of militarism. We stand in solidarity, empowered by the spirit of the ancestors, as stewards of Moana Nui/the Pacific Ocean.

History

Founded in 2019, the Pacific Peace Network stands on the shoulders of the Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific organisation formed during the 1970’s to oppose the nuclear tests. Pacific Peace Network representatives from Guåhan, Jeju, South Korea, Japan, Okinawa, Northern Marianas, Vanuatu, Philippines, Hawaiʻi, USA, Australia, and Aotearoa/New Zealand have held a range of events and actions focused on military activity and exercises rehearsing for war and the roadblock they pose to addressing the impacts of rising greenhouse gases and climate change.

Mission

The Pacific Peace Network aims to provide a structure and opportunities for people across the Pacific to meet, listen, learn, and organise to stand together for genuine peace and security free from the threat of war and nuclear weapons, acknowledging the immediate and future environmental security impacts.

Objectives

Halt all military exercises (land, sea, and air) in the Pacific region
Close all foreign military bases, facilities, and installations
Clean-up and rehabilitate all toxic military sites that continue to harm peoples, lands, territories, and waters
Revise the Treaty of Rarotonga to exclude transit of nuclear material
End weapons testing in the Pacific region
End the creeping militarisation and the introduction of new weaponry in the guise of 'modernising' Pacific nations' militaries that pervades politics and the economies of our region
